Automation and Material Handling Level 1 - Tech-World

In Level 1, students are guided to understand how automation is integrated into the manufacturing process and its impact on careers and production.

Beginning with the fundamentals, students examine the role that computers and robots play in isolated manufacturing tasks, known as islands of automation. They gain an understanding of plant layout and the requirements that must be met to make automation feasible. They examine the many methods of conveyance between islands of automation and learn how a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is organized to increase production efficiency.

Ultimately, students learn how a programmable logic controller acts as the "brain" to communicate and control the interaction among the islands so that production is efficient and timely. This is the essence of computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) that is so common in today's high-tech work place.
